Colloquium Series: "From magma to ash: an experimental look at explosive volcanism"

Date:

Monday, September 28, 2015, 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Location:

Haller Hall (GM 102)

Speaker: Dr. Donald Dingwell  (Ludwig Maximilians University)

Abstract:

The explosive eruption of a volcanic system on Earth may appear to us to be the most natural of geological processes. Nevertheless the physico-chemical path leading to the event is a remarkable one indeed. Understanding all of the levers and switches in such eruptive systems is a formidable task. Experiments help to isolate individual aspects of the system and to establish causal relationships. The rise of experimental volcanology has led to striking new insights into the way volcanoes work and the causes of their variable behavior. My talk will describe an experimental approach to explosive volcanic eruptions and the lessons we have learned, for monitoring, forecasting and mitigation.
