Admissions

EPS admits students for the PhD only; we do not admit students for the Master of Arts (AM) degree.

Requirements for admission are highly flexible and each application is judged on its own merits. Preparation in the related sciences of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics is as important as a solid background in geology. Students with backgrounds in biology, chemistry, Earth sciences, engineering, physics, and related fields are strongly encouraged to apply. For lists of faculty working in specific research areas, please browse our study and research areas.

Once enrolled, all graduate students are provided generous financial support, including research assistantships, full tuition and a research allowance. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for outside funding from such agencies as the National Science Foundation prior to gaining admission.

The deadline for admission in Fall 2017 has passed; the deadline for Fall 2018 will be updated here by September 2017. All details about the application process can be found on the GSAS website. On the application, applicants should list one to three EPS faculty members whose research fields seem closest to your own interests. (Please do not list Visiting or Affiliated Faculty.) We require prospective applicants to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and we do not require a writing sample.
