Goals

Recruitment strategies and support for URM graduate students.

Group Description

To promote equity in the graduate student application process, we aim to actively reach students from a wide variety of backgrounds who have an interest in the earth sciences. Our group makes an effort to provide information about what research in the earth sciences and graduate student life at Harvard look like. For students that have questions about the application process or are unsure where to begin, we offer resources and advice, including personalized feedback on their application. We also want students that enter the program to feel supported and included in many aspects of their work and life at Harvard, so we try to provide the information that students need to find many avenues of support, from department-based peer groups to Harvard wide affinity groups.

Current Projects

  • Compiling resources that will be of use for prospective students. For example, we have created a list of Affinity Groups within Harvard available to URM students, a "How to Apply" helpsheet and a Contact Sheet for specific research groups/areas. 
  • Assisting Alexis Stokes (SEAS Assistant Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging) with developing a series of recruitment events aimed at URM undergraduate students. This includes two panel sessions on "Where to apply and Marketing Yourself" and "Statements of Purpose and Letters of Recommendation" and an application assistance workshop aimed at giving feedback on students' draft statements of purpose. We have also helped out with an ESE-EPS Networking event and hope to hold another in Spring.
