Jonathan Smolen investigates feedbacks between life and the environment on a changing Earth – particularly, long-term dynamics between fire, climate, and vegetation. He uses organic molecular and isotopic signatures of geological materials like sediments and stalagmites to reconstruct ancient environmental conditions. A key goal of this research is to measure landscape responses to climate change and improve predictions of what our environment may look like in the future.
