New Science Advances Study lead by Frank Keutsch

December 19, 2025

In a new Science Advances study, SEAS researchers led by Frank Keutsch, Stonington Professor of Engineering and Atmospheric Science, directly sampled wildfire smoke in the upper troposphere and discovered unusually large particles with a measurable cooling effect. The team’s findings suggest that these particles, which are launched skyward by intense, fire-driven thunderstorms, may influence atmospheric composition and climate in ways not yet reflected in current climate models. Professor Steve Wofsy and Senior Research Fellow Loretta Mickley were part of the research team.
