Graduate Field Experiences

Every year, graduate students from Earth and Planetary Sciences have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in locations around the country and the world.

As a graduate student, you’re invited to participate in a department-sponsored field trip prior to the start of fall term. The trip is organized by current graduate students who:

  • Choose a destination region
  • Plan and lead the trip
  • Prepare the budget
  • Report on the trip upon return

Trips may include visits to geological sites and outcrops, hiking, tours of mines, research facilities, national parks, etc… All participants may be invited to contribute to the field guide and give a short presentation about regional features, the local environment, a scientific concept, flora, or fauna. Previous destinations include Washington state, the Canadian Rockies, Iceland, and Nova Scotia.

To learn more about field experiences, contact Aimee Smith.

The department has an inventory of field gear (tents, coolers, stoves, sleeping bags, rock hammers, etc…) that may be checked out for approved department-related purposes. Contact Caroline Carr, Event and Field Coordinator, for more details.
