Lluis Salo Salgado

Lluís graduated with a PhD in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering from MIT in 2023. His thesis, entitled “Numerical Modeling of Geologic Carbon Dioxide Storage in Faulted Siliciclastic Settings”, focused on understanding the effect and improving the characterization of geologic uncertainty on forecasts of subsurface CO2 migration.

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Structural Geology & Earth Resources Group, Lluís is examining the role of more than a century of reservoir operations on earthquake occurrence in the Los Angeles Basin. His goal is to leverage a unique, multidisciplinary dataset to develop and validate coupled flow and geomechanics models at the reservoir and basin scales. Results will be applicable to upcoming subsurface operations related to the energy transition in the LA area, as well as in other tectonically-active settings worldwide.

Lluís’s research interests include fault zone characterization, forecasting of subsurface flows and induced seismicity, with the overarching goal of enabling safe deployment of subsurface technologies for the energy transition like CCS, hydrogen storage or geothermal energy.

In his free time, Lluís enjoys the great outdoors, reading and spending time with his partner and cats.
