Earth is the only planet known to harbor life, but when Earth became habitable is still debated. Initially, Earth was uninhabitable because it was covered by a magma ocean and frequently struck by giant impactors. Through time, the first crust crystallized, oceans precipitated, and continents started forming. Yet, we don't know when these processes occurred and when Earth became habitable. WASHINGTON — The National Academy of Sciences announced today the election of 120 members and 24 international members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
Those elected today bring the total number of active members to 2,617 and the total number of international members to 537. International members are nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United States.
